Fear conditioning

Goal: learning and memory.

Principle: the animal learns to associate a neutral stimulus (context or cue) with an aversive stimulus (footshock). On a subsequent trial, animals are reexposed to the neutral stimulus only and freezing behavior is recorded. Freezing behavior is a typical fear response in rodents (defined as the complete lack of movement) providing a readout of memory.
